Weld Neck Flange
Tapered hub design reduces stress concentration in the weld. Most common flange type for high-pressure applications and thermal cycling conditions. Superior strength compared to slip-on flanges.
Standards
Materials
Slip-On Flange
Pipe slides over flange hub then welded on both sides. Lower cost than weld neck flanges. Suitable for low-pressure and non-critical applications. Easier installation but slightly weaker design.
Standards
Materials
Threaded Flange
Internal threads engage with pipe threads. No welding required, simplifying installation. Limited to low and medium pressure applications. Common in small-diameter piping systems.
Standards
Materials
Socket Weld Flange
Pipe socket into flange hub and fillet welded. Compact design ideal for small-diameter, high-pressure piping. Single fillet weld at the pipe OD. Superior to threaded for higher pressures.
Standards
Materials
Blind Flange
Solid disc flange with no bore hole. Used to close pipe ends and create removable caps. Common in isolation, testing, and future expansion connections.
Standards
Materials
Lap Joint Flange
Pipe overlaps flange hub and is welded on one side only. Uses a backing ring inside the pipe. Cost-effective for frequent disconnection requirements. Lower strength than weld neck.
Standards
Materials
Reducing Flange
Flange with bore size smaller than nominal flange size. Used to connect different pipe sizes while providing bolted connection. Combines reduction with flange coupling.
Standards
Materials
Orifice Flange
Flanges with tapped holes for differential pressure measurement instrumentation. Used in flow measurement systems with orifice plates. Includes unique pressure sensing configurations.
Standards
Materials
Spectacle Blind
Two discs connected by a bridge forming a figure-8 shape. One disc opens (bore hole) one side, other disc blinds (solid) the other side. Allows quick switching between open and closed states.
Standards
Materials
Swivel Flange
Flange with rotational hub allowing angular adjustment without bolting. Reduces installation stress on rigid piping. Used where alignment flexibility is needed during assembly.
Standards
Materials
Ring Joint Flange
Octagonal or oval metal ring seals between flange faces instead of flat gasket. Provides superior sealing for high pressure and high temperature applications. Requires precision groove machining.
Standards
Materials
Tongue & Groove Flange
Flange face with tongue projecting into mating groove. Provides gasket locating and improves sealing. Common in low-pressure applications. Reduces gasket extrusion risk.
Standards
Materials
Male & Female Flange
Male flange has raised face, female has recessed face. Provides improved gasket support and sealing. Common in pressure equipment applications. Prevents gasket blowout.
Standards
Materials
Lapped Flange
Flange with overlapping connection to pipe. Minimizes threading requirements. Combines features of slip-on with improved strength. Useful where threading is impractical.
Standards
Materials
Weldolet
Forged outlet fitting that welds to main pipe. Provides branch connection without cutting main pipe. Available in various types (eldobelt, latrolet, etc.). Used for branch takeoffs.
Standards
Materials
Companion Flange
Matching flange bolted to threaded or socketweld hub flanges. Used with equipment nozzles and specialty connections. Provides a standard connection interface.
Standards
Materials
Expander Flange
Flange hub expands from smaller to larger pipe diameter. Used for transition connections where step increase is required. More economical than two flanges and a transition piece.
Standards
Materials
AWWA C207 Flange
Water utility standard flange per AWWA C207. Used extensively in municipal water systems. Large sizes available. Specified for water distribution systems.
Standards
Materials
DIN EN 1092-1 Flange
European standard flange for industrial applications. Different face forms and pressure classes. Used globally in process and utility systems. Metric sizing standard.

A Note on API Material Discipline
API 6A and 6BX flanges have stricter material rules than ASME B16.5. Austenitic stainless grades (A182 F304, F316, F321, F347) are not permitted for API 6A pressure-containing flange bodies. The standard stainless variant under API is A182 F6a (AISI 410ss), a martensitic grade that survives sour service when supplied to NACE MR0175 / ISO 15156.
For strict procurement (domestic mill, PSL-3 or PSL-4, API monogram stamp), state those requirements on the RFQ. The catalog cards above show ASME-compatible material options; API material restrictions are applied at quote time.
Standards We Cover
ASME / ANSI B16.5 cover general industrial flanges. API 6A / 6BX covers wellhead and high-pressure oilfield service - the API floor of 2000# class is roughly equivalent to ASME 600#.
ASME B16.5
Steel pipe flanges, NPS 1/2 through 24. Use API 6A / 6BX for oilfield wellhead service above 600# class.
Learn MoreANSI
ANSI B16.5 is identical to ASME B16.5. API 6A / 6BX is the petroleum equivalent for wellhead and high-pressure service.
